ZANZIBAR DAY TWO

SPICE FARM

The next morning we went to a Spice Farm. 

There are many such farms in Zanzibar and we visited a privately

owned one.

The tree climber climbed high to get s bark sample for us to see.

We saw dozens of spice plants.

This is a cocoa "bean" plant. The brown beans are encased in the

white nodules and when released they look like beans.

A woman in the next field was planting her garden.

A star plant so decoratively displayed on the assistant's hand.

While we were following and listening intently to the guide his

assistant o and others were making us crowns, corsages, ties,

and bags from leaves and flowers.

 The weaving on them was very nicely done and they were 

very sturdy and strong. 

We felt like kings and queens of the spices.

Again we were given fresh coconut milk from coconut the 

assistant climbed the tree to get for us.

Later we also were treated to other nuts and fruits that were

also grown on the farm.

HOTEL MTONI AND BEACH

Near our cottage at the Hotel was a small cabin on stilts.
Sister Knecht and Sister Moon took the opportunity too climb
up and see what we were missing there.
Our rooms were much more comfortable and
more easily accessible.

We ate our dinner at the hotel and what a great meal we had!!
Good friends, good food, great atmosphere and
wonderful memories to take home with us.

airport to return to Nairobi then Kisumu
in time for a meeting tonight
and back to work tomorrow.

We had occasion several times to tell people
about our purpose for being in Africa.
Love being a missionary.

ZANZIBAR

MARCH 11, 14

JOZANI CHWAKA BAY

NATIONAL PARK ZANZIBAR

This is the only national park in Zanzibar.

The rain came soon after we arrived int he park.

Well, what can you expect in a RAIN forest?

RED COLOBUS MONKEYS

The red colobus monkeys are found here. They are usually up

in the trees and were there today. However sometimes they do

come down onto the ground so visitors can see their beautiful colors.

They are very different from the black colobus but still pretty.

river through the forest that brings water to the many trees and 

plants there.

STONE TOWN

Old town in Zanzibar also known as Stone Town.

Many scooters there. Many small shops - most 

catering to the visitor tourists

One area in the town there are beautiful wooden doors as 

entrance to homes, businesses and churches.

Each tribe, group or religion has different styles

of carvings and designs.

Many tell customs or beliefs of the peoples

who occupy the building.

DHOW RIDE

In the evening we took a taxi south to a point on the beach where we 

embarked on a dhow for a ride to our hotel area 

and a dinner and program nearby.

Nearby was this floating restaurant.

There were two crew members on the dhow and....

.... it took some time and hard work to get the sail set up and 

on the move.

We even had a drink of fresh coconut milk directly from the coconut.

We also were served fruit juice and pretzels and nuts.

We were let off the dhow out in the water and had to take off

our shoes to wade through the  water to shore.

MTONI PALACE

The Mtoni Palace was along the shore of the Ocean. was at 

one time the seat of power of Zanzibar from 1830.

The first Sultan of Zanzibar lived here.

Here we came for dinner and entertainment.

Before eating we each washed our hands from the eater

poured over our hands by the servers.

The entertainment was music an d singing performed by these musicians.

Later there were dancers who entertained with their native dancing.

The white building in the front is the Mtoni mosque
from the Ibadhi sect within Islam.
 It was probably after the times of Seyyid Said and was restored to its
present beauty in the late 90's.

The dinner and program and the palace and dhow ride were all
combined to a wonderful and romantic evening.
