OSTRICH FARM

We went to the Ostrich just past Athi River

and learned a lot about ostriches as we had fun together.

The grounds were beautiful!!

Notice the feather broom used to sweep the area.

The eggs and the newly hatched ostriches are kept in a special 

building for protection and safe keeping.

These ostriches are about 1 month old.

These are raised for the meat to be served in restaurants.

These are about 3 months old.

They like to peck at things - even at each other so they are often

featherless in areas of heavy pecking.

And they get older and bigger.

Don't you think he might be saying, "Why am I in here and you are out there?"

Interesting feet!!

To control them and move them around the workers

will grab them by the closed bill and they will follow and obey.

Once they are penned if the "gate", which is just one low 

branch , is removed the ostriches will not leave the pen

mainly because they don't look down to see of the gate in open.

These men are bringing the collected eggs in to be incubated.

If the eggs are fertilized they are cared for and hatched. 

If they are not fertilized they are blown out of a drilled hole and

then they are sold for souvenirs.

 

 Brynna found some feathers and was allowed to keep them.

This ostrich has been trained to be ridden.

There are pink male ostriches and also blue ones.

She rode almost like a pro!!

Rett bought a meal of ostrich meat and "chips" and

we all shared it with him.
It was red meat and very tender and even grained.

CHURCH AT ATHI RIVER

Elder and Sister Olsen were going to Church at 

Athi River and we tagged along with them. 

It was a spiritual meeting and the people were so 

very friendly and welcoming.

We also found some of our friends in the Ward.

He was our guide on the safaris and they are 

planning to go to the Temple next year.

Senior Couple Missionaries.

They were recently released as Food Initiative Missionaries.

Tias and her family.
She is the secretary for Brother Prince who is the
S&I Coordinator for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

BOMAS OF NAIROBI

Nairobi

On Saturday we went to the 

Ostrich Farm just outside of Nairobi.

On the way we passed the Nakumatt the missionaries call 

The Birds because of the huge birds who nest nearby.

Rett, Brynna, Susanne near a flowering bush at Bomas.

The grounds were very beautiful and very well manicured.

We were a little early do we had time to eat lunch.

Brynna and Susanne found the nearby hand washing station.

We ate in a lovely gazebo on the second story of the restaurant.

BOMAS is a venue where dances are performed from the 

different Kenyan tribes.

My camera wasn't the best for today but enjoy the pictures.

VILLAGE HUTS

In the compound are huts arrnaged in their tribal

fashion. These were very interesting.

I should have kept notes on the villages and types of huts 

we visited but didn't so just enjoy the pictures.
