TANZANIA

MARCH 10 - 11, 2014

We had wanted to visit Elder and Sister Knecht in 

Tanzania before we all went home and this was the best 

week for us as it was between very busy time for us.

a friend of Knecht's met us at he airport, helped us get out money

changed and took us to the Knecht's home.

We arrived late in the evening.

 WONDER-WORKSHOP

The next morning we visited some areas around Dar es Salaam.

The first was Wonder Workshop. 

This shop is a business for people who are physically handicapped

and they make decorations, displays and furniture from 

discarded metal.

They also have a area where clay pots and decorations are made

as well as jewelry and scrapbooks and cards.

Many famous people  have been here including President Obama.

This woman is marking a sheet of metal to be cut into strips to

then we woven to make large boxes that someone had ordered.

These are molds to pack with clay and in a nearby kiln to cook

the beads that will be made into jewelry.

This woman is chopping leaves to use as dye for paper 

which will be used for decorations and book covers.

They are painting designs on paper to decorate small box lids

or book covers.

TINGA-TINGA 

We then visited one of the many Tinga-Tinga shops.

Tingatinga is a painting style that was developed in the last

1900's in the Oyster Bay area in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania by

Edward Said Tingatinga. They are traditionally made on 

Masonite using several layer of bicycle paint which gives 

 bright and highly saturated colors.

When Tingatinga died in 1972 his style was so popular that 

it had started a movement of imitators and followers.         

INDIAN OCEAN

We then went to see the Indian Ocean.

FERRY TO ZANZIBAR

The next day we took the ferry to Zanzibar.

BAPTISMS

February 23, 2014

It is a great day when there is a baptism and today 

was no exception.

  baptized by brother Geoffrey

 and   baptized by Brother Elias.

both bore wonderful testimonies after the baptism.

Relief Society Presidency. Sister Josephine who is the
Primary President and Sister Beatrice who is the
first counselor int he Relief Society Presidency.

A wonderful event to send the Sabbath Day!!

BUSIA BRANCH CONFERENCE

March 2, 2014

For Busia Branch Conference
President and Sister Hicken came to Kisumu on Friday evening

and early Sunday morning we drove to Busia.

The Branch meets in two buildings and this view is the 

building in the back from the balcony on the front building.

On the return to Kisumu we stopped at the Equator and took

pictures at the monument.

Great day with wonderful lessons and instructions.

TRANSFER DINNER

February 28, 2014

Transfer time so we had the Elders over for dinner.

Elder Msibi who was going home to South Africa,

Elder Nyambita and Elder Moon.

After dinner it was time to learn how to tie a tie.

Elder Msibi filmed Elder Moon as he tied the 

Eldredge Knot on his tie.

Maybe he can do it when he gets home?!

MEMBERS IN KISII and MIGORI

February 27, 2014

We have decided that we can stay the night in Kisii and then travel 

to Migori the next morning and then go home. 

It is so much less time on the road and more peaceful and the 

visits are not so hurried and we can visit these members

who live so far from the Church and give more instructions,

KISII

David and his family live several km north of Kisii.

When we went here we had two other families meet at 

David's home with us.

Elder Moon. Brother David, Sister Phannice, Brother George,

Brother Josephat and Brother Aloyc (David's son).

Today;s instruction was on the Family Guidebook and the

new Family History Book.

They each promised to have FHE and family prayer and 

Family Scripture Reading.

And fill in the spaces of the Family History Book.

We then visited in the home of Brother George and his 

wife Martha and son Jaison.

In the evening we met with Enock and answered his 

questions. He is so desirous of knowing the truth of the 

Gospel. He is quick to understand and to live the principles.

We traveled along the Kisii -Migori Road and passed this church.

Missionaries were here several years ago and established this church.

There is also a branch of the Reorganized Church of Latter-day Saints

but they also have another attachment to the name.

The Church is in the top and the bottom is for offices.

This is one of the many trucks we have seen tipped over on the 

roads while we have been here.

MIGORI

When we go to Migori we meet with Benard and sometimes we
meet at his home in Migori and sometimes we travel to
another home several km outside of Migori.

Today we met Benard and Julius in Migori and traveled 

40 km west of Migori to the home of Samuel.

Samuel wanted some of his family to meet with us so there

were many of us as we talked about the Sacrament.

Here is a butchery near the home of Benard's sister that
we saw as we returned to Migori.

These are faithful people who live far away from
Branch of the Church. We are their only contact.

Serve a mission and enjoy meeting members who desire to be
an active part of the Church and Gospel.

GABRIEL NEAR KSIUMU

February 26, 2014

 Brother Marcellus introduced is to Gabriel who was very interested 

in being taught about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 

We went to  his home twice for lessons and each time there 

were other family members present.

We drove about 14 km them left the tarmac and then traveled

about 8 km on murran road which was very bumpy and rocky.

Then we walked up a steep hill to his home.

Here are pawpaw (papaya) and banana trees near his home.
The first time we were here we sat near these trees for the lesson,

They have 6 children but 3 of them sleep at their
nearby grandmother's home because
 their own home is too small for all of them.

just down the hill from his own home.

We had a wonderful lesson with people who desired to know
the truth. We  have enjoyed teaching lessons and seeing
the people smile and nod acceptance of the truths that are taught.
