FAREWELL TO PRESIDENT AND SISTER BROADBENT

June 22 and 24, 2013

 Have you ever seen 800 long stemmed roses?

Elder Harris brought these from Kitale for

President and Sister Broadbent.

Smelled pretty good!!

A mop bucket contained the rest of them.

 The missionary sisters really outdid themselves with the

great culinary breakfast rolls and muffins!!

There were more waiting in the "wings".

 Delicious food and hungry people!!

We had a wonderful week-end and

it is good to be home again and get to work!!

NAIROBI WITH ELDER HARRIS

June 23, 2013

While we were in Nairobi we visited some of the sites

the LDS Charities had funded and some other areas

with Elder and Sister Harris.

 LDS Charities had helped this day school with water concerns.

The teeter-totter in and interesting toy - one we have not seen in Kenya.

Across the road from the school were these apartment buildings.

Looks like today was laundry day.

Kids always like their picture taken!!

Boys will always gather together to have fun.

 

 More kids. One with a full bike and others with just the tires.

Many children here play with the tires as they roll them all over.

They use a stick to roll them along!

At the adjoining school for boys it was time for some football activity!!

On the corner by the school we this man ironing shirts.

He is using an iron that is heated with charcoal inside.

The cardboard box on the rock contained ironed and folded shirts.

On the corner someone had broke a water pipe (put in by someone else)

 and could now get water from it for no cost.

Many came here to get their water.

Along the way in this same complex area was a tailor doing his 

work in the fresh air with his treadle sewing machine.

It is a Singer machine with a Pfaff frame stand.

A "hotel" available to all who come.

LDS Charities had helped another school with their water concerns also.

This was a private boys boarding school.

Today was laundry for the boys who do their own laundry.

Some clothes already on the lines to dry.

Some hung their laundry out their windows.

We saw some great areas today and so glad we could get the

guided tour with the Harris'

NAIROBI

June 21, 2013

We went to Nairobi for some training foe the

computer program for Seminary and Institute and for

a farewell dinner on Saturday for 

President and Sister Broadbent

with the other senior missionaries.

Here are some pictures of our travels and 

other things in Nairobi.

We went the southern route through Litein and Narok.

But we also took a cutoff from Litein to Bomet and

it was a beautiful route. The road good but it really wound

through the hills and lovely tea farms!!

It appeared that every square inch of hillside was covered 

with plants - crops, trees, bushes.

Everything was so green!!

Near the crest of a hill we were stopped by traffic and people.

There was a huge truck tipped over in the road and no one could 

pass on the road.

A car ahead of us took off the side of the road where it was

rough and had a dry ditch through it. One car

had been high centered but the pick-up ahead had went 

right on around and up onto the road on the other side.

We tried it and made it through.

I was worried but not scared as we tipped to one side and then

the other and over rocks and bumps.

I forgot to take pictures!!

Near Narok the scenery changed to wide open places,

flat and green for a while and then....

it was flat and very dry..

Just before the turn up the escarpment to Nairobi we

saw this wagon and the donkeys. The men seemed

glad we would take their picture.

A trench was being dug by manual labor. 

You can see how deep it was and it was fairly long.

It was a good trip and we arrived at the center just in 

time for the training.

ERICAH WITH MAIZE

At Ericah's today we met her son's mother-in-law.

Their children live in Minnesota, USA

For the small meal we had she served us boiled maize.

She had some young ears that were more like we eat at home.

They usually grow it long we so it is hard and dry.

When we were leaving she took us to the maize field

and picked us some young cobs to take home with us.

Here she is in the maize.

Her granddaughter who was helping her for the day.

Road work on the way home. 

They are repairing pot holes.

More road repair - being done by hand labor.

More repair. The bags there are filled with a filler 

to cover over the dirt after in it is the pothole.

Some loads are too heavy to be able to peddle 

the bodaboda up the hills.

This is not a very clear picture but I think you can see what it is.
