We have planed for months to visit
Rusinga Island and Mbita which is southwest of Kisumu.
We have members of the Church there and were
anxious to meet them and share a Gospel message with them.
anxious to meet them and share a Gospel message with them.
We traveled there on September 16 with
President Okila and Brother Charles who knew
the area and has a sister living in Mbita.
We drove south west and passed by Kendu Bay and Homa Bay.
In Homa Bay we visited a few minutes with a member living there.
Richard (working with Doctors without Borders),
Charles, Elder Moon and President Okila.
On the road we saw this hill from an old volcano.
Homes and the dry terrain.
The road is shared with all other vehicles including
donkey drawn carts....
... and stationary donkeys that needed prodding along to move!!
Down the street of Mbita.
Mbita is a city that straddles the mainland and the
island and is connected by a land bridge.
A view of the street in Mbita looking toward the mainland.
Filling water containers with the lake water.
Rusinga Island is in Lake Victoria and is near the entrance to
the part of the Lake called Winam Gulf which shores is Kisumu.
A lovely view of the shoreline.
We first visited with
(She is Charles' sister)
It took three hours driving to reach Mbita.
We then went onto the Island and visited
in his shop on the main road.
We had a great visit with him and
learned that had just learned that was a member of the Church.
We then visited the home of Mama Elizabeth.
, Elder Moon, , President Okila and Charles
waiting at her gate to get admittance.
The view from her home.
A beautiful place to live.
A mosquito trap on the outside of her home.
This was provided for her by the doing
some studies.
The front of Elizabeth's home facing the Lake.
Mama Elizabeth and her son. All of her children (who live in Nairobi)
are members of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
except this son (who lives on Rusinga Island).
Elder Moon, President Okila, , Elizabeth's son, Charles,
Mama Elizabeth, .
We then went to the home of .
We were served a very delicious dinner and met their
sons coming home from school.
We were on a very tight schedule but were able to meet all
of the members there. We had a great visit as
we gave a Spiritual Message in each home.
These are all faithful members of the Church even though they
live so very far away from the branch in Kisumu.
After leaving the home of we went to the ferry
to be ferried across the channel to return to Kisumu.
This absolutely darling girl was on the ferry with us.
A view of the shoreline as we left the island.
There were several sail boats on the lake.
This sailor was rowing with his left arm/hand and was bailing water with his right!!
The ferry cabin for the passengers.
It was about an hour ride from the island to Utago on the mainland.
Coming into the shoreline of the mainland.
Homes on the shore.
The truck coming off the ferry.
I was impressed with this mother coming off the ferry!!
Click to enlarge and see it better!!
It was a two hour drive home from the ferry crossing.
We went through Ndori and Awach to Kisumu.
It was a wonderful day with good people, good food,
beautiful country sites, and spiritual messages with many testimonies!
Don't you wish you could be a part of these kinds of experiences??
