I had been to the Elephant Orphanage in November
but Elder Moon had not and it is near the Giraffe Centre
so we went there on our last full day in Nairobi.

These animals have been rescued as orphans in the wild.
Most of them were orphaned by poachers.
They sure like their milk.
The youngest elephant here was 2 months old.
This is a very young one and still used to its mother.
The blanket it there to simulate the mother.
In time it will be weaned away from the blanket.
Tasty leaves from a small branch makes a fine dessert.
Water is a great follow-up for any meal.
And since it is a warm day
a mud bath to cool off is a fitting climax to lunch!!
That was pretty good now how do I get out of here!!

Last time I posted a close up of the underside of the ear.
Now is a close up of the trunk. There is a ridge
down both side edges of the underside of the trunk.
Interesting!!

The older elephants (just like an older human baby)
can hold their own bottle!!
Tusks start to grow at about
Newer tusks and the water is so refreshing.
Although small the tank is ample for several to drink
from at the same time.
These leaves are really good.
How about a game of football?!!
More water and I don't even have to share!!
The mud hole becomes a very popular spot!!
When I was here in November there were no
elephants going into the mud but today many of them did!!
Let me out of here!!
Some of them really had a struggle to get out of the mud
and then up over the edge to the solid ground!!

This is one of the rooms for the
young elephants to spend the night.
There is a caretaker that sleeps with them. They are much
like human children and they will have nightmares and cry out in the dark.
The caretaker will sooth and comfort them.
After a while they will be on their own and won't need the tender care.
After going to the Tsavo Game Park they will be adopted into a
herd of elephants and will be taught to fear humans and run from them.
However, even thirty or forty years later if their caretaker will
come to them they will remember them and accept them.!!
