We met John at church in January. He is from Uganda and
is the manager or Director of a school in Western Kenya.
He invited us to sometime visit the school.
The time finally came.
He said to come early so he could show us around the
area before we went to the school...
We were also requested to answer questions
about the Church as we visited
the high school he directed.
We took President Okila, Fred (Elders Quorum
Pres) and Mike with us.
We thought we were going to Bondo which is directly
west of Kisumu but we traveled on and on further west -
a total of 100 km! -
and met John and his friend near Usengi on the
coast of Lake Victoria!!
In the fishing village we saw rows of homes and
shops and fishing equipment.
Here they harvest a lot of omena -
a very small silvery fish.
The fishermen hang lights on the water -
Elder Moon is holding a light hanger that is floated on the water,
there is the reed frame and then a wire frame
that is rounded up so a light can be hung and not get int he water.
The light attracts the fish and then the
huge nets are pulled up with the catch of the night.
The omena are then laid out on the nets on the ground to dry.
It takes about 3 hours to complete the drying.
They are then packaged and sold.
We saw something else that was interested in the omena!!
The women then "sweep" them up with their
reed brooms.
It is a big job to get them ready to sell.

There is an island near and also land jutting
out into the bay.

The white cover is over a green house that was
established to put women to work planting from
seeds and then they can sell their plants.
It has been a great help to the women who join the co-op.
If you look carefully you will be able to see a young man
taking a bath.
This was a beautiful area!!
One area we stopped in was a place to load fish in trucks
to be taken to market.
The potential buyer wanted only Nile perch so this
lone tilapia was left behind.

Another are where they had weighed the fish and now
were tieing them together.
We went to several different docks and everywhere we
went we were invited to sign their guest book

We stopped at Hippo Point Resort Club for a
cold soda before we moved on.
(No to be confused with Hippo Point in Kisumu)

John wanted us to visit a friend in the area.
She had planted tomatoes in her shamba but the
water rose over the plants and she ended up with
fish in her tomatoes!!
She wanted us to see them.

When I asked for a picture he immediately turned it
right then backwards and then with prompting put it
on the original way and smiled for the picture!!
It appeared to be made of plastic canvas and yarn -
or something akin to that.
A favorite toy here is a tire!!
It is pushed and rolled with their hands or a stick.
ports we were visiting and he tied them to the mirror of the
truck. We found later that they had scratched the truck
as they swung back and forth as we traveled.
We had nothing to put them in but a plastic bag
but we were told they would rot in a
"poly-bag".
At the the time we had a live chicken in the
"boot" so we could not put fish in there!!

We saw this bird dive down for food and come
up successful. After several pictures I gave up
trying to get one of his catches!!
