TRAVELING TO BUSIA
Our trip to Busia was to train and visit the branch but also to
help the LDS Charities and the Food Initiative Program
so we were there early in the morning to do the requested
activities.
We have begun the rainy season so it is time again to ready the ground
for planting and to plant. As we traveled we saw many
people out in the shambas with their jembas as they "plowed the
ground. Some times we saw cows yoked together pulling a plow
that made the work a little easier for the workers.
Big fields and small plots were prepared and ready for planting.
FOOD INITIATIVE
We needed to buy some equipment for the participants of the
Food Initiative Program and then we visited Brother John's
compound to see his compost operation. This is his home.
There is maize at the side of the house being dried in the sun.
In the back of the house there was a shady spot for the hog to rest.
Nearby was the "building" for the cows.
Two young children are inside to shovel the manure out of the structure
tot he outside so it could be shoveled into the first compost "hole".
Click on the picture to see it bigger.
Brother John then showed how they would shovel the manure to
the area of the first compost spot. Here it is mixed with other
shamba and home waste and turned every day or so.
It was then turned into the second spot which is where
Brother John is standing. It is there for several days ans then
turned over into the third spot which is in the area behind Brother John.
It is then shoveled into the fourth area where it is ready to use as
fertilizer for the shamba. There is a hole deep enough (now it is full)
to hold about seven tons of fertilizer. This is organic fertilizer and
good for the soil and the crops that are being raised here.
He has a large area of shamba and these are
banana and avocado trees.
The homes in his compound. The one on the left is for the family.
The next one was built for a son but is being used as a kitchen and
the next two are for sons who are on missions.
To the right out of the picture is a well.
Brother John showing his well with President Imende.
This well furnishes the water for about 16 families.
There is a trough running to the left that takes the water drips to plants.
THE MOTEL
At the hotel were some interesting things in our motel room.
Sign on the bathroom door....
...and you can see the need for the sign.
The toilet is to the front left.
Interesting closet doors. The doors to the left are
shelves and cubbies. The tall one on the right is
for hanging clothes. They doors are not squared
but work OK anyway!!
CHURCH AND THEN SOME
Sister Robai (YW President) on the right with two of the YW
showing their scripture bags they made at their activity this week.
They were sewn by hand and each had a side pocket and the
pocket and the top were closed with Velcro
and each had two handles.
Another YW with her bag.
The security and some members of the branch.
These people were walking by the church. Notice that three of them
are carrying young ones on their backs.
Others carrying their bundles....
