ERICAH WITH THE ELDERS

Sister Ericah invited us again to visit at her home.

She really wanted us to bring the Elders with us so

on a Thursday we took 

Elder Tsegaye and Elder Pienaar with us.

She had maize still on the cob out to dry and wanted us to take 

her picture showing the drying maize.

Maize is dried this way then rubbed by hand to remove

the kernels from the cob. The maize is then dried again
on the tarp in the bright sun.

After the maize is dried it is stored for later use. 

It is ground to make maize flour or meal to be used for 

cooking -  mostly for ugali, chipati and porridge.

In the compound next to Ericah's the neighbors are

building a new home. You can see the posts for support and

the cross branches that will give form for the mud.

I watched the man hack the post here for the branch to rest on.

The man was trying to hold the branch steady as he nailed

it to the post.

Elder Pienaar took off running to help 

and Elder Tsegaye was close behind.

The man then got inside and began cutting the branched away

from the doorway area. Notice the saw he is using.

As we were leaving we saw this house near the roadway.

The pit to the left was made from digging the clay soil to 

make bricks. You can see the pile of brick near the center

of the picture.People make their own bricks, sun dry them

then make a temporary kiln to heat with a wood fire to bake them.

We stopped to take a quick picture and people came

out of the house to see what was going on.

There was also a man who came from 

the back of the house through the

bushes at the side of the house.

 Beautiful scenery in the area.

We were able to find her home from directions

left by Elder and Sister Fox but as we left we

went a different direction - a "short cut"

shown us by President Okila when we had

been there before. We made a wrong turn and 

after some time on rough, bumpy and rocky roads we asked

directions and made our way to the main road.

Next time we'll know better!!
