JOYCE AND HER UPCOUNTRY HOME

After leaving Brother Ponga's home we went to

the home of Sister Joyce's mother.

In one place (the village market place) we saw
a large group of people congregating and we wondered
why so many would gather together on a week-day.
They were voting or maybe campaigning for the
village officers.

One of the roads or paths we drove on to the home.

Not many cars travel here.

Sister Joyce's mother is on the right and her

co-wife (sister-in-law) is on the right.

Their husbands are/were brothers.

The entrance door is to their left and the door with 

the blue curtain leads into the other room of the mud home.

 She was a school teacher and wanted us to spend the

rest of the day and the night at her home with her.

She was very kind and impressed that I knew 

a little Luo.

Joyce went outside  to a small room off front he porch

and brought us a dish of nyoyo.

This is maize and beans cooked together with some salt.

It was vary dry but tasty.

In front of the mud home the family is building a new

home of bricks and mortar for the Mama.

The brick walls are are laid and now they are throwing

mortar (cement) onto the walls and then will smooth

them with a trowel.

The mortar mixture was mixed in a pile on the dirt floor

and then a clump was placed on the wood board in his

left hand and then with the trowel he threw the mud onto

the wall where if stuck.

He was really quite fast at doing it!!

This is the main room of the house.

There will also be an indoor bath room -

and that is bath room -

no tub or toilet -

but a room to bath indoors from a pan of water.

This will be very nice for her!!

There is a large shamba beyond the front

"yard" of the home and the bananas are

nearly ready to be picked, cooked and eaten!!

Joyce showed us the well that was in the shamba area.

The yellow jug is lowered with the rope 

and brought up with water!!

Can you see the holes cut into the side near 

the top of the jug to let the water into the jug?

People come here to get water.

What a blessing it has been so they don't have to go 

to the river for water.

They also save rainwater in a large jug for drinking and cooking.

It had rained here so there was mud
with trenches from travelers.
We had a great visit here and
we were so glad we came to visit.
